The name certainly makes clear what it does. Safestore owns and operates warehouses that provide an affordable place to keep stuff where there is a low chance of it being nicked or messed about with.

It is the largest self-storage company in the UK as measured by amount of lettable space, with 6.47 million sq ft, as against 5.7 million sq ft for Big Yellow, the next largest rival.

That might sound like plenty of room for the population to stash away the furniture and other bits of kit and belongings that it doesn’t need to use day to day — or the businesses that use its lock-ups to store company paraphernalia — but the British self-storage market is a long way away from reaching
